10 Fabulous Options For Musical Entertainment On Your Wedding Week

BY The WMG Bride | 05 Oct, 2015 | 28698 views | 5 min read

What's a wedding without a little music? A little song and dance and a whole lot of fun. This is the time old uncles let themselves loose, aunties dance like they are Beyonce and the younger crowd ( read cousins and sisters) basically dance their way into someone's heart at the wedding. That said, a good wedding week needs it's heroes - and music is a big part of it. From family performances to popular Bollywood songs to your popular singer crooning to "Balam Pichkari", there are so many options one could look at. We were actually really wondering, how would modern day weddings use musical entertainment well? What would they choose - something predictable, something offbeat? Here are a few options we put together!

1. Jugalbandi

An interesting musical performance that is taking weddings by storm is a Jugalbandi. A Jugalbandi could be between a percussionist and a DJ, between two musicians or even between a violin player and a DJ. We adore Percussionist Jonqui and how he blends in with DJ music on a cocktail

Perfect for: Sangeet and Cocktail

2. Karaoke

No one can go wrong with karaoke - set up a box and playlist some good songs that everyone will enjoy and go wild. It can be fun if you had teams and people can go up against each other!

Perfect for: Mehendi / Bachelorette Party / Youngsters Party

3. Cover Band

It's very rare that a wedding includes English songs but if you have a few nice covers in mind, then a good band that belts out love songs and your favourite numbers might be a good idea. If they move between hindi music and english and do a mix - that's awesome too. We really love the band, The Other People. They play beautiful covers including all those cute Adam Levine songs.

Perfect for: Reception

4. DJ

No wedding is complete without a good DJ. Find one according to your budget and let him rip into your favourite numbers. We even love the guys who can seamlessly mix and match songs from the 70s to now. Make sure your DJ has a good stack of old and new numbers so the older crowd as well as the younger crowd are happy. Pick a few from our sweet list of DJs who can make your party a dream.

Perfect for: Reception/ Sangeet

5. Sufi fusion bands

There are very few people who love nicely done original music and rarely do these bands or singers get a chance to whip it up in front of a crowd. So choose a band according to your taste and your according to what your guests would like. There are so many new bands who do amazingly awesome music these days. Our personal picks are Faridkot, Daira, Jazbaa and Nasha ( Sufi rock band). No one's really heard their brand of music but we are sure you will enjoy it.

Perfect for: Sangeet and Reception

6. Folk fusion bands like Rajasthan Roots

Want your wedding to have some background music that is unique, appropriate and still going with the traditional theme you have set? Then folk fusion bands like Rajasthan Roots may be perfect for you. They can mix their tempo to suit your needs, and their music has a haunting quality to it

Perfect for: Wedding

7. Bollywood Singers

A good Bollywood singer will take over your timeline like no one else. But also remember that they are super high budget to mid-level. You can pick and choose people according to their songs - Kanika Kapoor, Badshaah, Vishal Dadlani, Benny Dayal.....oh, there are so many talented performers who can really take on your crowd. You could also try new-age singers like Anushka Manchanda and VidyaVox.

8. International Popstar : J.Lo / Gypsy Kings / Beyonce

This is for those with the big bucks but really, a cameo by an international star is so so awesome. Pick a star who embodies your kind of music - Ed Sheeran, maybe even Nicky Minaj - the sky is the limit.

Perfect for: Sangeet and Reception

9. Comedy Rock

If you think a few funny jokes and a bit of fun rock could make a change - then so be it. Vir Das in that sense, is a fun guy with a good sense of humour and he comes with a band, so it's a delight. And new, so try it out!

10. Punjabi Pop / Folk Music

By far the most interesting one of the lot - Punjabi pop can really make your guests go into a tizzy. Most Delhi weddings do prefer it and it seems like it can revv up the atmosphere in minutes. Gurdas Mann, Hans Raj Hans, Mika,Labh Janjua....and the list goes on. Bhangra gidda dancers also make for a great option here! We love Hari Sukhmani for this - good old punjabi folk fused with electronica.

Perfect for: Sangeet and Reception

For The Actual Wedding:

Note: During a wedding, people actually don't prefer any music or performances but a lone pianist or a reputed flute player would be a great addition! Anything instrumental works!
