Tanishq Bridal Collection for the North Indian Bride: The Wedding day

BY The WMG Bride | 20 May, 2015 | 25850 views | 4 min read

In the first part of this two part series, we took a peek at some of Tanishq's new collection which we think would be fabulous ornaments for your Mehendi. While those pieces were contemporary and edgy, we also took a peek at some of the more traditional pieces for the wedding day. Special thanks to Tania Seth for the photographs!

Wedding day

There is a reason why ‘getting ready’ shots of Indian brides are some of the best ever- its those tiny details, when she fastens her nath and looks in the mirror or that moment when the dupatta is finally placed on the head when the look totally comes together. We broke down Tanishq's collection by each type of jewellery worn.

The necklace : Whether you are wearing a choker, or a raani haar the necklace is where you will START the hunt for your bridal jewellery.  Many brides wear both, layering them one  under the other at different levels.

Top tip: Pick a necklace that contrasts with your outfit. Pick emeralds if wearing pink, pearls when wearing multicolors or rubies when wearing yellow !

The kadas were our favourite part of the collection

Kadas: These may be gifted to you by your grandmom or just bought as part of your wedding jewellery, but gold kadas, or bangles  are definitely one of the trousseau essentials for a Punjabi bride.  While your chooda (red and white bangles) is something that your moms brother will help you wear on your wedding day, you can keep one kada on each hang just to bring the entire bridal look together

Top tip: Replace gold bangles with two solid kada’s with stone detailing. They look chic and go with a number of different outfits

The cocktail ring: Whilst your engagement ring will sit prettily on your left hand(resist the urge to admire it on stage), a large cocktail ring in Meenakari and Polki looks super elegant as you raise your hands to put the Jaimala, or just when you pose in photographs with your hands crossed.

The Nath: Bring this up in a modern Punjabi household and you will hear quite a few opinions. Some girls don’t understand it (but how will I eat mom??? ) while some girls think they look stunning. Personally, we think a brides look comes together only with the Nath. Fun fact: the word Nath actually comes from a Vedic word which means husband and in olden times it was believed that removing a girls Nath is the sign of her no longer being a virgin

Top tip: Pick a nath with the thinnest gold wire you find and one with small beads on the side. Delicate naths lend an elegance without being overpowering

Matha Patti: Bold , chunky and wrapped around your head – the matha patti frames your face and the center of the matha patti- which is where the tikka rests is supposed to be the sixth chakra- signifying your soul.

Top tip: if you have a smaller face, then go for a more delicate matha patti . A chunky one can make your face look smaller, whilst if you have a larger face you can go with a more elaborate matha patti.

Jhumkas : One of the prettiest traditional form of jewellery is the ‘Lotan jhumka’. A plain circular jhumka with colored threads hanging from it – and girls still give these as favors on the mehendi. While those are much lighter pieces, they have inspired a whole new line of more elaborate bridal earrings from traditional jhumkas to three stone drop earrings.

Top tip: Make sure you choose Jhumkas with a ‘sahara’ or support at the back or else you will end up with really painful ears.

Haath phool: The haath phool is a hand ornament which is a bracelet that is linked to the ring in a bejeweled way. Worn by Maharanis in older times,  this ornament is becoming pretty popular with 2015 brides, as it lends a regal factor to your look.

And that’s a wrap ! Head to the Tanishq to check out all these baubles to build your own, customized wedding jewellery trousseau . While we may have focused on the Punjabi bride, they have a whole HOST of collections for other cultures as well – as their tag line goes “Hum har shaadi ke liye tayaar hain” . ;)
