What are the Rituals of a South Indian Wedding?

BY The WMG Bride | 23 Oct, 2017 | 2700 views | 2 min read

South Indian wedding is a very broad-term to refer to. It can either be Kannada, Telugu or Tamil and they all differ when it’s the customs and traditions are in question. The general idea we have about South Indian weddings is that they have an ample of plantain trees, dangling mango leaves and marigolds but that just isn’t the thing about it. South Indian weddings “usually” have early morning muhurats and mostly have no mehendi or sangeet ceremonies but most of the weddings are now a fusion.

There are slight variations in the rituals based on the community and region of South India. The rituals preceding the wedding are an auspicious bath, the making of the bride as in helping the bride get ready with makeup, jewellery and stuff; puja, vratham and then begins the ushering of the bridegroom. The betrothal of the ceremony is finalized at a “muhurtham” and then garlands are exchanged, and it is ended by aashirvad, that is showering rice on each other.

Here’s how to plan a cool South Indian Wedding. Enjoy!!
