Understand how it works

Surprisingly a lot of us are totally unaware of how our hair's cycle works. Here is the simplest explanation possible. Our hair grows from the follicle, or root, underneath the skin. The hair is ‘fed’ by blood vessels at the base of the follicle, which give it the nourishment it needs to grow. Every hair strand goes through 4 cycles in its life.

So yea, how hair fall works is like this, certain factors push the hair from the growing phase to the shedding and resting phase faster. If the hair enters the resting phase too early, excess shedding and noticeable thinning of the hair can occur.

Identify the cause

Never, ever treat severe hair fall by itself without identifying the root cause. Out hair usually has a cycle of growth and fall, but if the hair fall is severe and has been going on for a long time, then causes like sun or pollution might not be the real reason. Get checked by a doc and make sure that the hair fall does not have a medical reason to it like say a hormonal condition. This is the first step with regard to dealing with chronic hair fall. Here are the 7 main reasons for hair fall in women.
  • Telogen Effluvium
This means that hair is shifting faster than normal from its growing phase into the resting phase. This is something that can occur after drastic weight loss, extreme stress or even pregnancy or a major surgery, in which you shed large amounts of hair every day, usually when shampooing, styling, or brushing. It can also be a side effect of certain medications.
  • Hereditary Hair Loss
Genetic hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia and is the most common cause of hair loss- even in women. The gene can be inherited from either your mother's or father's side of the family, though you're more likely to have it if both of your parents had hair loss.
  • Hormonal issues
PCOS and hypothyroidism are very common these days in teens and 20-something women as well, and you need to get checked out to rule out any hormonal imbalance as the root cause.
  • Iron deficiency
A lot of us are deficient in iron or anaemic without realising! This is one of the major causes for hair fall in women.
  • Scalp infections
An unhealthy scalp can cause inflammation that makes it difficult for hair to grow. Skin conditions that lead to hair loss include dandruff, psoriasis, and fungal infections such as ringworm. So if your scalp is super itchy combined with hair loss, then this is worth a check.
  • Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks hair follicles. If your hair is falling out in patches, this might be the culprit.
  • Excessive Styling
This is something a lot of us are guilty of these days. Too much shampooing, styling, and colouring can harm your tresses. Heat and chemicals weaken the hair, causing it to break and fall out. Often, it's a combination of treatments—keratin, colouring, and blow-drying, for instance—that does the damage. So now that you understand all this better, and have identified your cause as either medical or cosmetic, here's what you can do to help yourself! 1473716487_img1472317626981

Eat right

So our hair needs a lot of vitamins and minerals to be healthy. Any deficiency can lead to hair loss, so brides who are planning to go on crash diets, remember that! Some foods that are good for hair growth are eggs, seafood, chicken, beans, nuts, grains, milk, cheese, rajma, soybeans, spinach and whole grains. So make sure to include more of these in your diet!

Tips and Tricks

  • Don't stress over it. We know that's hard when you see clumps of hair, but stressing about it will only make it worse!
  • Consult a doctor and start some hair growth supplements like Biotin.
  • Use a wide toothed comb instead of a brush if your hair is falling out too much.
  • Do not comb wet hair as it is more prone to breakage at that time. Detangle before a shower instead of after.
  • Sleep on a silk pillow case instead of cotton, as this reduces friction while sleeping and hair is damaged lesser.
  • Avoid tight hairstyles that put too much pressure on the follicles like say a tight top knot bun.
  • If you lose a lot of hair while washing it, instead of washing it everyday, switch to alternate days or every 2 days.
  • Do not let the conditioner touch your scalp. It is only for the ends.
  • Avoid too much styling and products. Do it only on special occasions and not everyday.
  • Oil your hair, especially the roots. A hot oil massage can do wonders for your hair and stress levels!
So no matter what you do on the outside, if the reason for hair fall is internal, then you can slow down but not avoid hair loss. Here are some home remedies that can really help! 1467892665_NARINA_TAREK_GOA_2038
  • Onion juice
This is a remedy man women swear by. It can stink a lot, but apparently it helps! Rubbing onion juice with a cotton ball on your scalp and leaving it for about half and hour before washing is supposed to help. This can be done twice a week.
  • Egg mask
You can put a raw egg as it is or add something to it like olive oil, green tea, honey, banana etc. But the egg white and yolk is what does the trick.
  • Curry leaves
Curry leaves are also an excellent remedy for hair loss. You can either get into the habit of eating a raw leaf every day or boil some curry leaves in coconut oil and use it to massage your scalp.
  • Castor oil
Castor oil is also great for growing new hair, but it's a heavy oil so make sure to dilute it with coconut or almond oil before using on the scalp.
  • Methi seeds
Another excellent home remedy for hair loss. There are two ways to use this. Either soak some methi seeds in water overnight and mash them up and put them in hair (which can be a bit difficult to wash off) or grind them up and mix a spoonful in coconut oil and apply on the scalp. If you want more tips on how to avoid breakage and have long luscious locks on your big day, then here are some more tips! So stop stressing and start taking extra care of your hair!
