This Wedding Had A Bride & Groom Who Wore Denim For Their Pheras!

BY Sakshi | 29 Sep, 2023 | 2765 views | 4 min read

Now this is something we haven't heard or seen before! A bride and groom in denim for their wedding? Well, this couple here did it, and no, it wasn't what you think- they did not say their 'I Do's' in jeans! Ace designer Manoviraj Khosla's daughter Ahaana got married to her beau Shehan in the UK, and the wedding definitely was unique, as they were the first bride and groom to wear denim during their ceremony.

Meet Ahaana & Shehan

This is a love story that goes all the way back to high school in Bangalore at the age of 15, a story that travelled to London, Edinburgh, Bombay and Dubai. And a journey, that last October, led to a proposal on a very remote, yet stunningly beautiful Arctic beach. 14 years in the making, their love rages on.. Why Hampshire? We both spent many years in the UK and always had a dream to be married in the English Countryside.

The Wedding

From The Bride:

I just got married to my childhood sweetheart of 14 years in the Four Seasons Hotel in Hampshire, UK and we both wore denim for our pheras, making us the first bride and groom to ever do so! Our clothes were designed by my father Manoviraj Khosla. I wanted my father to design my wedding lehenga even-though he's a menswear designer. The butterflies and dragonflies on our clothes signify change, transformation and a new beginning.

The Lehenga

Ever since I started dreaming about my Big Day, I always knew I wanted to be a different bride. As the daughter of a fashion designer and a trend forecaster myself I knew I had to wear something that was representative of my personality and personal style. As a person I am quite laid back, chilled out, fun-loving and fashion-focussed so I really wanted to feel like that on my wedding day. When it came to designing the lehenga, we had many ideas and one of them was to do it in denim, at first I said no way, this isn't a fashion show, it's my wedding, how can I do my pheras in denim? Well that's just unimaginable. But I thought about it for a while and one day it just clicked. As someone who loves wearing denim, I realised that this is so me!! Denim is so versatile, timeless, trans-seasonal and can seamlessly take you from day to night. While my dad had some wild ideas like doing frays and going really funky, the one thing I was very clear on was that it had to look like a wedding lehenga. And I wanted all the embroidery to mean something...

I had a clear vision on what I wanted it to look like and we worked for months to make it a reality. It was a true collaboration and I feel so blessed to be able to say my dad designed my wedding lehenga.

I also am someone who is very sustainably conscious, so I wanted my wedding lehenga to be something I could re-wear and not have to keep locked up in a cupboard forever. The butterfly blouse can be easily styled in a non-indian context and I know I can re-wear the lehenga for another wedding without the fear of upstaging the bride :)

The Groom’s Bandhgala

So when we finalised on my lehenga, my dad said if we’re doing denim let’s go all the way and do Shehan’s look in denim too. So drawing inspiration from my lehenga his bandhgala was also embroidered with flowers, butterflies and dragonflies and his shoes were sprinkled with tiny embroidered butterflies to match my dupatta and blouse.

Decor & Ideas

We insisted on using silk flowers instead of real flowers on the mandap and in the decor because we both hate wastage and feel so bad seeing the flowers from weddings get thrown away. So all the flowers were silk except the jaimalas which my mom insisted on being real! Another cute detail was that we gave all the guests evil eye cut outs with the flowers to bless us. Because no nazar on this couple!
